Detoxification Is Essential For Your Health. How Does Glutathione Help Me For Toxins Cleansing?

Detoxification or detox is defined as the removal of toxins from the body. You learned all about list of toxins toxins on the previous page. You learned that you need a dual strategy to successfully deal with toxins. You need to prevent them from coming in and you also need to know how to cleanse toxins in the human body that do make it in.

And you also learned that glutathione (GSH) is essential to keep you from being literally poisoned to death. Click here to learn about all of the roles that glutathione has. It’s much more than a detoxifier!

The list of toxins in products today is long. Today we have toxins in your home, toxins in food, cosmetic toxins, everyday toxins, and as a results we end up with toxins in blood.

We have tens of thousands of toxins in our environment today, poisons that were not known just a hundred years ago. These end up as toxins in the human body. Our body has a large order to fill - to successfully help us to remove them as they come in. And with disease on the increase, it is becoming increasingly evident that our bodies need an extra boost to keep up!

Just how does glutathione work in its role of detoxification?

Glutathione was first discovered in 1888 by, but much was yet to be learned once it was found. It wasn’t until about 30 years ago that it was discovered that one of glutathione’s main roles is to assist with cleansing toxins from your body.

Now that there is growing evidence regarding the role of toxins and disease, and the powerful role that prevention plays, we have access to research that shows us just how glutathione keeps us from becoming full of poisons and toxic substances.

Your liver and kidneys are your main organs of detoxification, and therefore they contain the highest amounts of glutathione. They are primarily responsible for cleansing toxins from your body.

If you didn’t have glutathione in your body right now, you would not be able to read this sentence because you would be dead from all of the poisons in your body. Really!

And it’s not just humans that have this powerful protein at their disposal. Glutathione plays an important life-sustaining role in all vertebrates, and even in insects, plants and microorganisms!

Regarding the role of glutathione in cleansing toxins from your body, a team of biochemists comprised of D.P. Jones, L.A Brown, and P. Sternberg from Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta wrote, “GSH has multiple functions in detoxification and its depletion has been associated with an increased risk of chemical toxicity....GSH can be depleted by different agents (and GSH) plasma levels vary with gender, age, race, and dietary habits.”

They suggest as a result of their findings that we can measure the risk that environmental toxins pose to an individual by monitoring their glutathione levels.

H. Lew and A. Quitanihila, physiologists at the University of California, saw that the increase in glutathione levels of physically fit individuals make them better equipped to handle toxic threats.

Along with R.J. Flanagan and T.J. Meredith at the Poisons Unit of Guy’s Hospital in London, they found that glutathione, in addition to being used for acetaminophen overdose, , a frequent occurrence in England, that research will also show its potential to detoxify carbon monoxide, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and other harmful compounds.

Acetaminophen has long been known to reduce protective levels of glutathione. For a slide presentation on the FDA's website that lists known glutathione depleting agents, click

You might be surprised to find out what many do every day that depletes their protective glutathione levels!

The way glutathione works is as a chelating agent. If you are familiar with chelation therapy, substances are introduced into your system, so they can bind to the toxins and remove them from the body.

Glutathione does much the same thing. It binds to the toxins in your system with an enzyme called conjugase, and this process is called direct conjugation.

This process is also described very well in the Physician's Desk Reference listing for a glutathione enhancer. You can view this listing here. (this link opens in a new window)

On this page, it is explained that "Through direct conjugation, (glutathione) detoxifies many xenobiotics (foreign compounds) and carcinogens, both organic and inorganic...Glutathione augmentation is a strategy developed to address states of glutathione deficiency, high oxidative stress, immune deficiency, and xenobiotic overload in which glutathione plays a part in the detoxification of the xenobiotic in question."

Chelation therapy works well, but it is invasive and needs to be performed by a medical professional. You can raise your glutathione levels in the comfort of your own home by taking in the building blocks every day as a drink or food.

toxins in cigarette smoke

Once the glutathione binds to these toxins, they are neutralized and liquefied, and they can exit the body as harmless waste. Some of the common ways the toxins will exit the body are through the bowels, urine, and sweat.

Glutathione safely shows you how to cleanse toxins by successfully neutralizing and removing a large number of pollutants, carcinogens, heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides, and radiation. Mercury poisoning is a concern to many people today, and glutathione successfully removes mercury from the body as well.

We are continually exposed to this list of toxins every day through cigarette smoke, automobile exhaust, food preservatives, and dental amalgams to name a few.

We depend on glutathione to safely remove them. And glutathione enhancing substances are being used with increasing frequency in the field of toxicology, and they are having much success!

Many wonder, though, how will they feel when they start to undergo detoxification? Great question!

Detoxification : Will I Feel Worse Before I Feel Better?

< Much depends on you, your level of exposure, and how quickly you raise your glutathione levels. Most don’t notice anything at all.

There are a few things to keep in mind when raising your glutathione levels, particularly if you have been exposed to higher than normal levels of a particular poison or are suffering from toxic poisoning. You may have a toxic reaction as a result of these toxins being released into your system, but this can be anticipated and overcome.

This has been referred to as a Herxheimer Reaction. It’s a short term reaction that may occur as glutathione does its job in your body removing the toxins. They just need to be flushed away, and you will once again feel fine.

Think of it like this: when we use the bathroom, we flush the waste away with a large amount of water. We need lots of water to carry it away safely. The same is true in our body. When toxins are released and enter our bloodstream, we may feel a little worse at first, until those toxins are flushed out of our system.

So, raise your glutathione levels for detoxification, and drink plenty of water, preferably alkaline water. A general guideline is half your body weight each day in ounces. So if you weigh 160 pounds you would need 8 10 oz bottles or glasses of water a day. If you'd like to obtain your own alkaline water machine for home use, please contact us here.

Note what the Physician’s Desk Reference listing for a particular form of glutathione enhancement has to say under “Adverse Reactions:”

“Transient urticarial-like rash in rare individuals undergoing severe detoxification reaction. Rash abates when product intake stopped or reduced.”

This may be experienced no matter what form you use to raise your glutathione. But that is a good thing! Ask yourself: "Would I rather have those toxins IN my body, or get them OUT?

I think you will agree it is worth it to get them out!

Always seek out the advice of your treating physician before undergoing any medical treatment for detoxification.

Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The UltraMind Solution, has an excellent video all about glutathione and how you can successfully raise it. The previous page contained another video by the same doctor on the subject of detoxification in general. Now you can learn how to raise glutathione as a detoxifier here:

In conclusion, glutathione is your essential key for detoxification from the poisonous substance we have all around us. Your liver and kidneys need glutathione to do their job of cleansing toxins from your body.

Raise your glutathione levels, and you will be happy, healthy, and toxin free!
