Glutathione Tablets : What They Do - And What They Don't Do

You can go to your local health food store, and find oral glutathione or glutathione capsules in supplement form. What will it do?

When you take glutathione tablets, the glutathione in the pill will be broken down by your digestive enzymes and effectively be eliminated. The tablet ingredients will not make it to the cells of your body where they need to be absorbed for how to raise glutathione.

So glutathione tablets will not raise your glutathione levels.

It will cost you some money, though, so it may lighten your wallet a little.

There was a published medical study done on this in 1992 entitled ”The systemic availability of oral glutathione.” The study can be viewed online here. (this link opens in a new window)

This study concluded that “...dietary glutathione is not a major determinant of circulating glutathione, and it is not possible to increase circulating glutathione to a clinically beneficial extent by the oral administration of a single dose of 3 g of glutathione.”

So glutathione capsules will not raise your glutathione levels. There are lots of manufacturers of all sorts of oral glutathione tablets, capsules, and pills out there, and some of their ads may even be on this page. Don’t bother, unless you have some extra money you want to throw away.

What about taking glutathione capsules to lighten your skin?

There has been much information written about glutathione tablets being able to lighten your skin. However, I have not found any medical studies that clearly support this claim. In time, more research will be published, but until then, we cannot know for sure.

As far as I can see, from the published research that I have seen, taking glutathione orally in any form will have no effect on you at all.
